March Birthstone - Aquamarine
March Birthstone - Aquamarine
The Aquamarine is known to be March’s birthstone as well as representing the 19th wedding anniversary. Aquamarine’s preferred colour is a somewhat strong dark blue to a slightly green-blue colour. However, through heat treatment the affect turns the aquamarine more blue rather than a green. This stone found its name because of its colour linking to seawater, ‘aquamarine’ is derived from the Latin word for seawater. This gemstone is found in the countries Nigeria, Brazil, Vietnam, Mozambique, Madagascar, Zambia and is mined at the high elevations in Pakistan’s Karakoram Mountains.
This stunning gemstone rates at a 7.5 to an 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, therefore it is a relatively soft stone. When faceted the aquamarine is often unusually transparent with vitreous luster, so it really sparkles.
