February Birthstone - Amethyst

The Amethyst is a variety of quartz that is famous for its blend of deep violet colours and a light lilac hue. This stone can be found in most countries, some of them being …. The name stems from the Ancient Greek word ‘Methustos’ which translates to ‘Intoxicated’. They believed wearing this stone would protect them from drunkenness and enabled them to keep a balanced mindset.

As mentioned previously, Amethysts are composed of quartz, it is the second most plentiful material found in the Earth’s crust. Just like other quartz it’s hardness is a 7 on the Mohs scale which makes it a great option for jewellery, but it also can be quite a brittle stone so something to be careful of.
